Our Studio

When Herm started working with MJ on illustrating picture books, it was clear that MJ’s tiny home art studio was too cramped for two artists. So Herm tore down the old studio and designed and built a new one. It’s a two-story addition to their old farmhouse, with windows overlooking their back meadow and woods. Here's a tour of the studio, showing where each step of creating a book takes place.

Though Herm did the most of the building, Ian was always willing to help when extra hands were needed – from hoisting six-foot picture windows to their positions on the second story to faux-painting the walls sixteen feet above the floors. Each section of the studio is set up for a specific process in the creation of the picture books or novels.
